At a time when many companies are keeping a close watch on staffing needs, make sure you stand out to colleagues and leadership without being terribly obvious that you are attempting to do doing so, says Sandra Naiman, author of The High Achiever’s Secret Codebook , now on bookshelves (Jist, $14.95.) Her tips:

– Develop strong communication and presentation skills. Your ability in these areas speaks to your professionalism, confidence and competence. At all times, in both your formal and informal communication, you want to be articulate and succinct. If necessary, take classes and hire a communications coach.

– Build your network inside and outside the company. Your network can never be too large. It is important also, that you attend to both the quantity and quality relationships. Grow your network by making valued contributions through committees, task forces and one-on-one. Be on constant alert for opportunities to contribute and support others either directly or by sending them important links and other useful information.

– Attend meetings, webcasts, and conference calls prepared. Do your homework and anticipate how you might demonstrate your knowledge and competence by adding value to the conversation. Be careful, however, not to monopolize or make others appear wrong or uninformed.

– Power dress. Low cut tops and other provocative clothing has no place in the work environment. Even if you are in a call-center, dress professionally. If you are looking to advance, dress as though you already had the position.

How do you do this when you are new in the area? I make myself know everywhere I work but being new in the area and not knowing all of the info does not make it easy to do. Any suggestions?
