Meet Cecilia Jones

Cecilia Jones is director of the international financial planning and analysis group at Genzyme. Her team functions as the liaison between Genzyme’s international offices and the corporate finance team in the United States for items such as budget planning and forecasting. A native of Argentina, Ms. Jones came to the United States in 2000 to pursue an MBA, with intentions of returning home upon completion. But when an interesting job at Genzyme caught her eye in 2002, Ms. Jones couldn’t resist applying and has been working at the company ever since.

Q. What brought you to Genzyme?

A. I think it was a bit of luck. Having come from Argentina, I didn’t know anything about the company, but thought the job advertisement for a financial analyst within the Americas group sounded interesting. Once I read about Genzyme and talked to people who were familiar with the company, I was really encouraged to apply.

During my interviews, I felt that I had a great sense about what the company was all about. The passion that people spoke with was amazing. I remember thinking, either they are all very well-trained on the same messages or are truly passionate about what they do. Now that I work here, I know it’s the latter.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. I have the opportunity to work with people from all over the world and greatly enjoy the variety and diversity that is Genzyme. The company keeps growing and expanding, but still has the same core values and focus on patients that I noticed during my interview. Even though my responsibilities are within finance, I enjoy the work that I do and think it’s great to work for a company that has a bigger purpose.

Q. What advice do you have for young women?

A. Keep your options open. Don’t stick to one particular path because you just don’t know where life will take you. I never thought I would be working at a biotechnology company in the United States, but here I am and I love what I do. Don’t limit your options and always keep an eye open for new opportunities. Stay optimistic and always give 100 percent.

Meet Pamela Rockwell

As Senior Director of Customer Business Solutions (CBS), a newly created cross functional group within the Finance department at Genzyme, Ms. Rockwell leads a team of 18 employees from across various business units. This collaborative team is responsible for all functions within the scope of Order to Cash, such as the customer service and accounts receivable teams.

Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, Ms. Rockwell joined Genzyme in February 2007 to optimize this strategically important functional area and build a sustainable model for the future.

“When I first came to Genzyme, there were several employees across the company with similar functions, but different strategies to carry them out. This new position at Genzyme that I was fortunate to be given, was created to bring these employees together to streamline and optimize the order to cash responsibilities,” said Ms. Rockwell. “Our team has developed common objectives in business process improvement based on industry best practice and has already accomplished many of the goals that we have set for ourselves.”

Before joining Genzyme, Ms. Rockwell spent four years working at a clinical diagnostics company where she assumed a leadership role similar to her current position.

Prior to that, she worked as a distribution analyst, Global logistics analyst and Global project manager in several industries including fortune 500 companies focused on healthcare and the paper industry. The experience of traveling to and working in many countries outside of the United States has armed Ms. Rockwell with an understanding and respect of cultural challenges that contribute to the successful businesswoman she is today.

“I have been very fortunate in my career to have gained valuable exposure to the world of international business and have brought those skills and lessons with me to Genzyme,” she said. “And, I was thrilled when this opportunity of joining a world class biotechnology company such as Genzyme, whose increasing growth and success I had been observing for years.

Ms. Rockwell believes that Genzyme truly “walks the talk” and provides opportunity for anyone within the company who is committed to achieving success.

“Assume that you have no boundaries for your career, set clear goals and focus on the steps required (such as education and experience) to help you achieve them.” said Ms. Rockwell. “Find a mentor or someone to champion your career regardless of where you are, and always seek new assignments and experiences to help develop a foundation of expertise to achieve those goals.”
