Revenue Agent
Qualifications:
--Must be a U.S. Citizen
--Bachelors Degree with 24 semester hours of accounting and 6 semester hours of business courses
Revenue Agents conduct on-site examinations of individual, business and corporate tax returns to determine correct federal tax liabilities and/or conduct examinations relating to compliance with technical requirements imposed by the Internal Revenue Code.
Agents in the Small Business and Self-Employed Division conduct examinations of individuals and small businesses.
Agents who work as Bank Secrecy Act examiners conduct compliance examinations on certain categories of financial institutions and non-financial trades or businesses in order to identify, detect and deter money laundering whether it is in furtherance of a criminal enterprise, terrorism, tax evasion or other unlawful activity. BSA agents determine if the entity properly registered, maintain records and file reports required by the anti-money laundering statutes and regulations.
Agents in the Tax Exempt and Government Entities Division apply their professional accounting skills in conducting examinations of employee plans, exempt organizations and government entities.
Agents in the Large & Mid-Size Business Division conduct examinations of large and mid-sized corporations. They frequently deal with issues such as tax shelters, mergers and acquisitions, and global operations. They work closely with senior-level executives of corporate tax departments and their representatives, facing significant challenges in researching and developing tax issues.
Revenue Officer
Qualifications:
--Must be a U.S. Citizen
--Bachelors Degree in any Major
Revenue Officers collect and secure delinquent accounts and tax returns. Duties of a Revenue Officer include tracing the whereabouts of delinquent taxpayers, setting up acceptable plans for them to liquidate their tax liabilities, attachment of wages, and seizing and selling assets when an acceptable plan cannot be reached. Revenue Officers prepare and analyze taxpayers’ financial statements.
Special Agent
Qualifications:
--Must be a U.S. Citizen
--Bachelors Degree with 15 semester hours of accounting
--Must be hired before the 37th birthday
--Must tax and pass the Treasury Enforcement Agent test
Special Agents in the Criminal Investigation Division enforce the criminal statutes related to tax administration and determine whether an individual, business or corporation has committed a willful attempt to defeat or evade the tax laws of the United States. Special Agents investigate complex cases involving tax crimes, narcotics, organized crime, public corruption and international money laundering. They attend the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick, Georgia, and learn criminal investigation basics from federal criminal law to firearms training. They may also attend specialize training in computer crimes, undercover operations, electronic surveillance techniques, court procedures and trial witness training.
