Banished For Not Having Right 'Look'

If you’ve been to an Abercrombie and Fitch store you’ve seen the buff young shirtless men who greet you at the door. But in London, a young woman who got a job at a A&F flagship store (and who didn’t exactly hide her prosthetic arm, but didn’t exactly wave it during the interview) was banished to the stockroom after a manager spotted it and wouldn’t allow her on the main floor.

He claimed she didn’t have the right “look” that the firm requires of all employees. The woman, Riam Dean, 22, is suing the retailer for discrimination. A&F recently settled a similar lawsuit here.
What do you think? Should an employer have the right to a “look policy” and pick and choose whomever it finds pleasing to the eye? Let us know..

The NFL and NBA and most industrial jobs require certain physical characteristics, as does Hooters, most military and law enforcement – in terms of size, height and weight requirements. I think any organization – including those who hire “santas with bellies and real beards” SHOULD be allowed to have a “look” policy AS LONG AS they are upfront about it, advertise and people know going in what the requirements are. Models have to have a “look” – the Ford agency sure doesn’t hesitate to hire based on looks, as do most agencies.
So, a “look” policy is okay – as long as it’s official, publicized and truly is about a “look” and not a gender, color or physical disability….but then, who’s to say what’s a “look” and what’s discrimination? Tough – I know. And I’m fat, 53 and have been told I don’t have “the look,” so this is from a strong awareness of what the reality is!
