What's YOUR Social Media Strategy?
Editorial Team 10At Maria Shriver’s recent Women’s Conference in California, I told more than 2,000 women that if they’re NOT immersed in social media now, they’re making a BIG mistake.
Afterwards, hundreds of women emailed and approached me to say that while obviously they knew about sites like Twitter and Facebook – often, thanks to their kids – they didn’t fully appreciate what it could do for them. There’s an assumption that the sites are only for making friends, not for advancing a career.
Think Results, Not Barriers
Editorial Team 1We wrapped our fall season of Women For Hire career expos in Dallas earlier this week. I’m home in New York for a few days – and then to Houston next week to speak at the Texas Governor’s Conference for Women – and then to Miami Beach for a couple of days to be inducted into my high school’s alumni hall of fame.
Bust the Barriers to YOUR Success
Editorial Team 10By now I think you probably know my background: I wasn’t born wealthy. I dropped out of college. I was fired from a job I thought I could have forever. I married for love, not money. And I’ve spent 11 challenging, but exceptionally rewarding, years building my own multi-million dollar business. I’m proud of it.
But along the way, I admit that I’ve often envied many other women entrepreneurs – especially ones who’ve seemed to have all of the right connections, access, money and answers. They’ve seemed to just breeze into big success. Sometimes I’ve even told myself: “Yeah, of course it’s easy for them to succeed, especially with that kind of backing.” (I’m sure we’ve all thought that about someone at some point.)

Editorial Team 4I wish I had a dollar every time someone told me that networking just doesn’t work. I hear it from jobseekers who show up at events and leave empty-handed. I hear it even more often from small business owners who aren’t generating bites, let alone sales, from their extensive networking efforts.

The syndrome denotes the anxiety of running out of money, losing financial security, and ending up homeless. Rooted in societal expectations and financial challenges, this fear can lead to undue stress, inadequate risk-taking, and an unhealthy relationship with money.

Editorial Team 37I’m staying at a lovely Westin Hotel in Pittsburgh to speak at the Pennsylvania Women’s Conference. On my bed, there’s a card that reads, “You have the option to decline housekeeping service for the day. For helping us conserve natural resources, we are happy to offer you a $5 gift card for use at participating food and beverage outlets.”
