Out of the mountain of stats tied to the latest unemployment report — 8.1% Americans are jobless — one number stood out: 8.6 million people now work part time, up 787,000 from a month ago. Over the past year, 3.7 million people — who want to work fulltime but can’t find jobs — have joined the part time ranks. They are, in short, “doing what it takes” to stay afloat — a strategy we’ve aways favored, whether it’s asking a spouse to return to work, make kids chip in more or accept a lower salary and standard of living to make ends meet.
