Employers Struggle to Fill Positions in Several Industries

Despite the more than 11 million Americans who aren’t able to find work and an unemployment rate that is over 7%, many employers say they are having trouble filling positions, Kiplinger reports. Job openings exist across a broad range of industries — from agriculture and long-haul shipping to accounting, manufacturing, health care, IT and more.

In some cases the problem is unappealing working conditions or low wages, which employers in industries with low-profit margins and intense competition can’t do much about. In others, the issue may be a lack of candidates with the right skills. And the deficit is only likely to get worse as experienced baby boomers retire. Plus a larger share of jobs will require higher skills — college (or greater) degrees or specialized computer, health care or other training.
